Bowflex 1090 Dumbbells Review

One of the first names that come to mind when you think about exercise equipment is the Bowflex. A lot of it has to do with the unique designs available compared to other exercise machines. Back in 1986 it was the patented power rod designed by Tessema Dosho Shifferaw that helped bring forth its popularity. Today, the machines are considered to be used for strength and cardio training and were first introduced as infomercial products years ago. The funny thing is they still get most of their sales from these commercial options today. It’s safe to say most of the equipment they sell is either some sort of home gym or tread climber. However, they also sell the Bowflex 1090 dumbbells.

You will find that the Bowflex 1090 Dumbbells fit anywhere, especially if you’re crunched for space. They adjust easily, which allows them to do the work of multiple dumbbells at your local gym. The weights will be anywhere from 10lbs. to 90lbs. and are set for 5lb. increments. Most of the individuals who use this in their home do so for strength exercising, leg lifts or just toning. It’s also extremely durable so you will have them for many years to come. If you are worried about not having a proper exercise routine, the Bowflex 1090 dumbbells also comes with a DVD that has 30 different exercises.

When you look at the dial mechanism you will notice the single handle is a part of it. When you turn up the dial you can see that the weight plate is attached to the handle. It’s an extremely easy display to see, and very helpful if you need to know how much weight is on there at the present time. If you want to tone up a bit you can use the lighter weights. Strength exercises would include curls and raises if you plan on going this route. Oh and if you need more demanding training you can add extra weight for lunges or shrugs. The most important part is you will save money since you don’t have to purchase additional dumbbells in order to gain strength. Then of course everyone loves when there is a warranty present, and the Bowflex 1090 dumbbells offer a 2 year warranty on all parts and 5 years on the weight plates.

We always recommend looking at the reviews, and in this case they are quite positive. The only drawback we found through our extensive research is that the Bowflex 1090 dumbbells are a bit cumbersome to lift off the floor. In order to overcome this you can always purchase the weight stand which makes it much easier. You will also notice that the handle is a bit awkward at first since it’s not round, but a rectangular shape. Some individuals don’t like the texture on the palm side either. You can fix this by taping the handle.

Another thing to remember is that it’s not a “one size fits all” setup. Just remember that if you tape the handle of the dumbbells it will feel more comfortable. If you’re looking to save money it’s a huge alternative to purchasing several different dumbbells. If you don’t want to purchase a weight stand you can always use sturdy boxes or crates as an alternative. This will alleviate the chance of you straining your back while picking them up off the floor. Then again, just use the proper technique to pick the Bowflex 1090 dumbbells and this won’t be a problem either.

Im thinking about ordering selectech 1090′s, they are $700 for a set. that is expensive so i was wondering if its worth it? are they cheaply made or have you had any problems with yours? do i really need the $200 stand for them too? thanks for your input

well the 1090 model i think goes up to almost 100 pounds for each dumbbell…which means each dumbbell can replace a handful of dumbbells. Think of it this way, if you were gonna go out and try to buy a dumbbell for each dial you can switch the select tech dumb bells to you will end up paying considerably more. I have a pair of the 552 and they work just fine after 2 years!! i even dropped them a couple times and they still work fine…however they seem that if you drop them to much they will eventually break.

I am thinking about buying them, which one is better? The 552 or 1090? I know that these dumbbells have adjustable weight settings, which is best thing, and that saves a lot of room and space, that way you won’t have a huge rack of dumbbells everywhere. Anyone who owns them or has used it before, do you really recommend it?
here is what they look like:

This does not concern me losing weight, I am talking about making my arms stronger and bigger, better biceps and triceps, etc.
I want to work out for self-esteem reasons and health reasons, not for women.

i own the 1090 and yes i really do the like the them the fact that you can change them to different weights. saves alot of room and money when consider how much it would cost to buy a whole set like you see in the gym. the only downside there bigger and longer than regular dumbells and i had to get use to them and adjust my stance and position to make em work for me. other than that I really like them.
